Pencil

Hello, I'd like you to meet my new favourite skirt: I often shy away from pencil skirts because of their tendency to be very business-like and not too flattering on a girl with "meatier" calves, but the print on this one was just too beautiful to pass up. I'm excited to find more ways to dress it down so that I can get lots of wear out of it in the coming months; I think I will start with a simple t-shirt or a striped top with a statement necklace. How would you style it?

Wearing: Zara skirt and shoes, BCBG jacket and ring, cardigan and purse from Asia

  11. This is so pretty, Jen! I'm the same way, I never wear pencil skirts because they generally feel very corporate to me, like I'm playing dress up! But this one is gorgeous, I love the print and love the way you styled it! And completely in love with those shoes!! The lucite heel is amaaazing! xo.

I love floral pencil skirts. The pairing of black, white, and yellow is so pretty. You do look very ladylike in this outfit, in a very chic and sophisticated way!

  17. I always think about pencil skirts in work terms since I wear them at work, haha. But I love pairing them with ruffly silk blouses or blouses with giant pussybows. You could probably make it more casual/stylish with your fave black faux fur vest ;)

  19. Love how you added in the pop of colour Jen! The skirt is beautiful and I can see you pairing this in so many different ways!

I'm glad to be back as well - I feel like the only time I have to blog would be over the Christmas and Spring break. The past few months have been extremely stressful and I've just been breaking out a lot. I've been meaning to test out your oatmeal routine so I'll probably give it a try the next few days :D

  20. That skirt looks amazing on you.

I've been warming to pencil skirts since last year and no longer consider them to be just "work" skirts because they're so flattering and versatile. Plus, I find as I get older I gravitate towards them because they project a more grown-up look.

Friday night was fun! The boy had a great time. Let us know anytime you want to try a new restaurant. And if D is in the mood to drive a long way for food one Sunday morning, the boy and I know an AMAZING brunch spot. It's like Vancouver's best kept secret for an excellent brunch and our all-time favourite. ;)

  26. Beautiful print! I always love finding solid black/white prints that don't seem too optical-illusion-esque and this one is really tastefully designed especially how it seems like two different skirts from behind/the front. Definitely feeling like trying the backwards cardigan sometime soon now (it looks lovely!) Hope you have a good week xx

  31. What a unique skirt! I totally wasn't expecting the back to look the way it does; the same goes for your sweater. Amazing details in this outfit. I'd totally style it with a striped shirt too or a tee with leather details.

  32. Okay Jen, I'm fairly confident you can NEVER say you have meaty calves haha. You are teeny tiny, and that word could never be used in reference to any of your parts! Anyway, I absolutely love this look, that skirt is beyond amazing and I love how the pattern gives it some edge. Beautiful pal!

  34. You have done so well with the new Zara collections, Jen! I've admired every single one of the pieces you've picked up, but I think this skirt is my favourite. I shy away from pencil skirts, too, but for a different reason - although they're supposed to flatter curves, it's really hard to find one that fits curves properly! I'm still searching :) In the meantime, I just love the way you've styled yours - I've been meaning to try the backward cardigan for ages, thanks for the reminder! It looks so lovely on you

Ooooh, I didn't realize the pattern was inverted color-wise on the back on that skirt. Very sophisticated.

I also love the backwards cardigan look. (I wish I could make it work on me, but my bust is hard enough to properly fit in cardigans when worn "correctly" that it's just all sorts of odd when flipped.) It's great paired with this pencil skirt, though - it's just enough character to stop it from looking too professional.

  42. I really wish I had as much success as you have at Zara. I never find anything and when I do its never in my size, its heart wrenching. I agree about how you need to have the right sort of calf to pull off a pencil skirt, in this case i don't think you have any problems.
