5 Minute Face

by Jen on Thursday, January 5, 2012

I don't profess to know a lot about makeup - it's definitely been trial and error (with lots of error) for me over the past few years. However, I'm happy to have finally found a routine that's quick and does the job for me. Due to a few reader requests, here's a step-by-step on the make up I wear on a typical day and what I would usually have on in blog outfit photos. For me, it's all about defining my eyes and adding a bit of colour to my cheeks because I'm very pale. I use products with the intention of looking more awake, and I like to look fresh but still natural. If I'm in a rush, I'll skip out on the eyeliner. I hope this helps!

{start with cleansed, moisturized, bare -gulp!- face. conceal under eye area & redness - for me, that's around my nose & chin}
After trying a variety of products, including Laura Mercier and BareMinerals, I've returned to Bobbi Brown's corrector and concealer. I have very bad eye bags and this does the job better than anything else. The correcter serves to neutralize the blues and purples under your eye and the concealer blends it in with your skin. Still trying to find something for eye puffiness though - any suggestions?

{subtly line eye, curl lashes and apply lash primer & mascara}
MAC's fluidline in Blacktrack is my favourite - it stays put all day. I start in the middle of my eye and draw a slight cat eye towards the outer corner. I curl my lashes with Shu Uemura's curler, then put on Shiseido's nourishing mascara base, which makes anything you swipe on top work 10 times better!

{apply a dash of bronzer onto cheeks - I put it right on the cheekbone}
I've been using this NARS Danmari palette for my cheeks everyday. It's complete with some of the brand's most popular shades (including Orgasm) and the colours are great for a large number of skin tones. Here, I used the bottom right shade, Sin.

{finishing touches - I fill any bare spots in my brows, apply lipbalm & control shine with a bit of powder}
Applying Laura Mercier's Brow Definer (I use Warm) is a subtle way to make eyebrows more shapely. I've recently learned how big of a role well-groomed brows make to the overall look of a face so have only been doing this for a couple of months. Shiseido's Therapino Oil Balm is one of my favourite lip balms and Make Up Forever's HD Powder is a transluscent loose powder that gets rid of any excess shine.

{The finished look: ready to face the day!}
Check back next week for a post on my skincare routine! If you have any questions, feel free to ask me over on Formspring!

Great makeup tutorial! Can you do a tutorial on the cat eye? I have been trying to learn how to do a cat eye but can't seem to get it right.

Nice look into your makeup routine. I'm all about the 5 minute face and using makeup to fake being awake. :-) If I want to get fancy, I just add a bold lip colour.

Keeping things natural is the best! I also have very bad dark eye circles.. I use Kat Von D and a touch of YSL's Touche Eclat and sometimes it still isnt enough! Might give Bobbi brown a try, thanks for the tutorial!

Ah, I definitely want to try the Bobbi Brown corrector and concealer, my dark circles just do not want to get better haha. I liked how simple everything is and you explained it well. Have a great rest of the week and thank you for sharing!

The Japanese Shiseido products are the best! They're so well priced and great quality. I love the oil makeup remover and mascara-I always stock up when I'm in Japan.

Did you find that lip balm here?

This post is proof that you don't need a lot of makeup, to look great! I've never filled in my brows either, how do you do it without having it look way fake?

My gosh girl, you don't even neeeeeeed make up. You're gorgeous with AND without it!

I just read in a mag that for puffiness, the trick is to spalsh cold water 15-20 times on your eyes. I haven't tried it yet though, but hope it helps! :)

The Bobbi Brown correcting duos are amazing. I have the same issues with dark circles - and have tried wide variety of concealers because of it - but hers is by far the best I've used.

Have you tried tea bags under the eyes for the puffiness? The caffeine in black tea bags can cause the vessels to restrict, reducing water retention.

LOVE that Covergirl mascara! It gives such a falsies effect :)

Great post, you look beautiful either way but I'm so glad you shared and I really like the products you use. Nars and the Makeup Forever powder are two of my everyday staples. Your skin is flawless too! Happy New Year :)

Hi,

Thank you so much for the tutorial, I half expected you to never even get to my request, considering all the request you get all the time. But I am so happy you took the time to explain everything so clearly =). I literally went online right after reading this and purchased the NARs Danmari palette! I look forward to your skin care routine! =)

Love this little peek into your makeup routine, you always look so polished and beautiful! I'm big on highlighting features as opposed to covering them with makeup and I feel like that's exactly what you do...beautiful without anything on but you use makeup just where you need it to really bring everything out! Hope you had a great weekend lovely xo

Love this! I did NOT realize your skin was so beautifully even that you only need powder and concealer! I have to wear a full face of concealer (I use Bobbi, too), BB Cream or foundation, powder foundation to set the foundation and concealer, in order to even out my skin. I'm very jealous that you're able to complete your beautiful face in 5. I'm lucky if I can do 15!

You're so darling. I've missed your face.

Come visit me in Hawaii. I promise it'll be ready by the time you can come! Wanna see your lovely, smiling face this year or next!

Xs, Os and Aloha!
